I don’t know what it is about this YouTube series show starring the wonderful Neil Patrick Harris, Felicia Day, and Nathan Fillion, but I love it with a passion. For those that don’t know about it, it’s set in Los Angeles. Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris) is an aspiring evil villain who wants to get into the League of Evil but is foiled by his arch-nemesis Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion). They also have a mutual crush on Penny (Felicia Day), an adorable do-gooder with causes. The series was written in 2008 during the Writers Guild of America strike. It is a musical, so if that is not your thing, you may want to skip this.
Last week’s post was on cliches, and I think this video is an excellent follow up to it. There are a lot of cliches that are used in the series, but they’re used in new ways or changed subtly to make them into something new. The writers also changed the arch types for the characters on their heads slightly. The “good guy” is an anti-hero, while the “bad guy” has more humility. So if you’re feeling stuck on some cliches, this may give you some inspiration for how to change things.
Also, I have heard that they might be coming out with a sequel. (I’m so stoked!)
